The ocean is a place as beautiful as it is terrifying. Filled with all sorts of known wonders and beautiful treasures, but also a place teeming with undiscovered mysterious and terrifying creatures churning just beneath the depths. The ocean, without a doubt, is a truly creepy and off-putting place – but there are places throughout the vast sea that are much creepier than some others.

The one thing that makes the ocean scary beyond belief is our intrinsic fear of the unknown. As of right now, even after countless expeditions and the commonality of having a diving license in Malaysia and the wider world, only 5% of our world’s ocean has been discovered. Even those with an open water diver certification or a padi license have barely grazed the ocean’s depths, and the average layman would only ever see it in its mildest form; frothing and turning by the edge of the beach. But beyond that, in the deepest, darkest abyss, mystery swirls undiscovered – and some of the deepest, most mysterious parts of our world are still sites of great fear and unease.

So, without further ado, here are 3 of the most spookiest places in our oceans.

1. The Great Blue Hole

Located off the coast of Belize, the Great Blue Hole is exactly what it sounds like – an enormous, perfectly circular ocean sinkhole that plunges deep into the heart of the sea. Surrounding it, the comparatively shallow parts of the ocean bed make the giant hole even more foreboding – dark at its center, it almost looks as though it’s a portal to another world; with only the natural buoyancy of the water keeping boats and ships from dropping deep into the black abyss.

Even floating across it in the relative safety of a boat breeds fear and anxiety, for if the ship crashes, there’s a high likelihood that it’s debris and it’s bodies will sink to the deep, undiscovered bottom; left to rot in the deepest, coldest recesses of the ocean bed, forgotten by the sun.

2. The Bermuda Triangle

Also known throughout the world as the Devil’s Triangle, the Bermuda Triangle is arguably one of the most mysterious and terrifying places in our world’s oceans. The Triangle got its infamous designation due to a history of maritime and airtime disasters and disappearances that often occurs within its borders; with ships and aircrafts often destroyed and left as debris over it’s waters, or vanishing to never be seen again.

The mystery of the Bermuda Triangle has spawned countless debates among theorists and non-believers alike. Some believe the Bermuda Triangle is not nearly as mysterious as it’s made out to be, and that all disasters were simply coincidences. Other people cite oceanic activity or even alien interference as causes. Either way, it’s clear that the Bermuda Triangle is quite the mystery for many people – and holds its place as one of the spookiest places in the ocean.

3. The Mariana Trench

The Mariana Trench earns its place on this list as one of the deepest discovered regions of our ocean. Plunging 10 thousand meters below sea-level at it’s deepest, this crescent-shaped trench is home to some of the world’s most bizarre and terrifying deep sea creatures; where angler fish float about unperturbed, and scarier looking things lurk undiscovered within its depths.

Perhaps the scariest thing about the Mariana Trench is not, in fact, it’s depth, but all the things that this depth may imply. The darkness of the deep oceans may mask all sorts of terrifying things, and a fear of the unknown is something all humans harbour. For now, we can only make guesses as to what huddles in the deepest, undiscovered regions of our ocean – and pray we won’t regret finding it.
